Steven Izzo brings over 25 years of experience to his current position as Beverage Director & Sommelier at Waterbar, which he began at in the fall of 2007 to help them build the beverage program from the ground up for the eventual restaurant opening in January 2008. Izzo oversees and maintains an extensive collection of both domestic and international wines, as well as the classically minded cocktail & spirits program.
Steven started his career as a bartender near his hometown in 1986 at a lively dockside restaurant in Guilford, Connecticut. After years of working in a variety of east coast fine-dining establishments he made his way to California finally settling in San Francisco in 1996. He spent 11 years (1996-2007) at One Market, starting as a bartender then eventually moving into the role as the Beverage Director.
In addition to his responsibilities at Waterbar, Steven has participated as a member of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Tasting Panel, and currently serves as a judge for both the San Francisco International Wine Competition and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Izzo has passed The Court of Masters Sommelier’s Certification level exam and plans to sit for the Advanced Sommelier exam next year.
